Stop!

Stop in the Name of Love” was a song performed by The Supremes in 1965. Some of the lyrics are: “stop in the name of love, before you break my heart, think it over.” “Stop” and “think it over” are what I want to talk about today.

Many of us don’t slow down, let alone stop, very often do we? We’re in perpetual motion, like the proverbial hamster on a wheel, running round and round, never giving ourselves permission to stop.

What do you think you’ll miss if you simply stop? Do you keep running because time doesn’t stand still, and you feel like you must do, say, accomplish, or control more? How often do you stop, think things over, and then decide what to do or not do, rather than simply react? Or, on the other extreme, do you think almost everything over and over, never stopping that vicious circle.

What if you stop, think things over, decide where to spend your energy and resources, and change course? What if you choose to say:

Right now, I will stop
rushing through my life
being judgmental
feeling powerless

Right now, I will stop and really listen to my
children and grandchildren
parents and partner
friends

Right now, I will stop and engage with my
Higher Power
spirit energy
inner voice

Right now, I will stop and allow myself to
slow down
accept imperfection
grieve

Right now, I will stop and hear the
sounds outside my home
way I speak to others
music

Right now, I will stop trying to
keep up with other people
avoid my problems
always be right

Right now, I will stop
over-committing
putting everyone else before myself
dwelling on the negative

Right now, I will stop avoiding problems by
burying my pain in some addiction
making excuses
hiding out

Right now, I will stop and see the
colors of the landscape
beauty of a flower
smile of a child

Right now, I will stop being so
concerned about what others think
self-righteous
darned serious

Right now, I will stop
trying to keep up with others
worrying about things I can’t control
being afraid to speak up

Right now, I will stop allowing others to
mistreat or abuse me
disrespect me
minimize me, or my opinions

Right now, I will stop being afraid to
love
trust
change my life

Right now, I will stop and
connect with the people I love
value experiences above things
create a peaceful home

Right now, I will stop so that I can simply be
present in this moment
aware of my value
still, just me, alone with God

I know how scary stopping can be. One day this particular life will end. Although your spirit will live on, likely, you probably won’t get to control that specific “STOP on our journey.” Right now, however, you have a little more flexibility.

Are you willing to stop in the name of love for yourself, and think it over?”
